• 47 of the 50 tools process your files entirely in your browser. The file is not uploaded to us or anyone else.
• Summarize, Translate and Book brief, and the Ask panel in the Studio, are different: they send text extracted from your document to DeepSeek, a third-party AI provider, through our server.
• Documents you open are kept on your device (in your browser's storage) so they survive a reload. Clear on the Desk removes them.
• Inkwell has no accounts, sets no cookies, and runs no analytics, advertising or tracking scripts.

When you use one of the 47 on-device tools — merging, splitting, compressing, signing, converting, editing in the Studio and so on — your browser reads the file and does the work itself, with code that runs in the page. The file and the result are not sent to our server or to any other service. The result is handed to you as a download from your browser's memory.

OCR PDF and Image to text also run on your device, but the first time you use them your browser downloads the recognition engine and English language data from a public CDN (see other services). Your image or PDF is not sent there.

Summarize, Translate and Book brief and the Ask panel in the Studio use DeepSeek, an AI provider based in China, to write their answers. Here is exactly what happens when you use them:

• Your browser extracts the text from the document (for a PDF, its text layer; for a text file, its contents). The file itself is not uploaded — no images, layout or attachments.
• The browser sends that text to Inkwell's server function, hosted by Vercel. Texts longer than 200,000 characters are refused.
• The server keeps the first 14,000 characters of the text and sends them to DeepSeek, together with a short instruction. Translate also sends the language you chose. Ask also sends your question and up to 6 earlier questions and answers from the same conversation, each shortened to 900 characters.
• DeepSeek returns its answer, which the server passes back to your browser. Inkwell's code does not save or log the text, your question or the answer on the server.

Once DeepSeek receives the text, it is processed on DeepSeek's systems, outside Indonesia, under DeepSeek's own terms and privacy policy. We do not control how long DeepSeek keeps it. Do not use the AI features for documents you are not allowed to share with a third party, or that contain information you do not want to leave your device.

The Ask panel sends nothing until you press Send this document, and that permission covers only that document while it is open; Stop sending or closing the document ends it. The conversation is held only in the open page and is gone when you reload. Summarize, Translate and Book brief send the text when you run them; each of those tool pages says so.

To limit abuse and cost, the server counts AI requests and their estimated cost per IP address. These counters live only in the memory of the running server: request counts reset after 1 hour, cost counts after 24 hours, and all of them whenever the server restarts. They are not written to a database. If the AI features are switched off on the server, requests are refused without contacting DeepSeek.

Inkwell stores the following in your browser. None of it is sent to us.

• Your open documents — an IndexedDB database named “inkwell” holds a copy of each document you open on the Desk, in a tool or in the Studio (its contents, name, type, size and when it was added), plus the Studio's working state: which documents are open, the page you were on, and marks you have made but not yet exported. This is what brings your work back after a reload.
• Your theme — localStorage key “inkwell:theme” holds the name of the colour theme you picked, and nothing else.

There is no automatic expiry: this data stays until you remove it. Clear on the Desk deletes every stored document and the Studio state. Clearing this site's data in your browser settings removes everything, including the theme. Your browser may also delete it on its own when the device is short of space, and private windows usually discard it when closed. On a shared computer, press Clear when you are done.

Inkwell does not set cookies, has no user accounts or sign-in, and does not use analytics, advertising, fingerprinting or other tracking tools. We do not sell or share data for advertising.

• Vercel (Vercel Inc., United States) hosts the site. Pages and static files are served from Vercel's network, and the server functions run in Vercel's Singapore region. Like any web host, Vercel records standard request logs — IP address, the address requested, time and browser type — to run and secure the service, and keeps them according to its own policies. Inkwell adds no document text or AI requests to these logs.
• DeepSeek receives document text only when you use the AI features, as described above.
• Google Fonts: the site loads the Figtree and Fraunces typefaces from fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com, so your browser sends Google its IP address and standard browser information when the fonts load. No document content is involved.
• jsDelivr: OCR PDF and Image to text download the Tesseract.js recognition engine and English language data from cdn.jsdelivr.net, which receives your IP address and browser information. Your files are not sent.
• Your own HTML: if an HTML file you convert with HTML to PDF refers to images or styles at web addresses, your browser fetches them from those sites while rendering it.

Links to other websites lead to services with their own privacy practices.

• Use only the on-device tools if you do not want document text to reach DeepSeek.
• Press Clear on the Desk, or clear this site's data in your browser, to remove stored documents.
• Because Inkwell does not store your documents on its servers, we cannot see, export or delete them for you — they are under your control in your browser. For questions or requests about any other data described here, contact us.

If the way Inkwell handles data changes, we will update this page and its effective date before or when the change goes live.
